Trivia[]
- In order to address issues with the SG552, the rifle was redesigned in 2008 and released as the SIG SG553. It was changed to have its internals more closely resemble that of the other rifles in its family.
- Both the SG552 and SG553 have long barrel variants that are compatible with bayonets and rifle grenades.
- There have been instances in which the fixed-length folding stock has been replaced with a SAN Swiss Arms adjustable length folding stock.
- The SG552 and SG553 can be fitted with a Brugger & Thomet quad-rail handguard. Various American made handguards are also compatible.
- An American version of the rifle is produced by SIG Sauer of America. The first generation is the SIG 556 which can accept an AR-15 magazine and stock, and features an optic rail, removable rear sight, and railed plastic handguard. The second generation is the SIG 556 Classic which improves upon the previous iteration changing out the handguard and stock for the same kind used on both the SG551 and SG552 for different length variants. The most recent generation is the SIG556xi, a major overhaul of the rifle based mostly on the SG553. It is chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO, .300 Blackout, and 7.62x39mm. This variant incorporates a different barrel and gas system used to quickly change barrel length and caliber while the rifle is fully ambidextrous and user configurable.
